FirstGEN Fellows - The First Generation Civil Rights Fellowship Program, or FirstGEN, is a paid summer program for undergraduate students who are the first in their immediate families to attend college and who intend to pursue careers in social justice. DREAM Iowa - DREAM Iowa compiled a list of scholarships available to DACAmented and/or undocumented students at the state and national level.

Scholarships for International Students This list was created and (mostly) maintained by members of the National Association of Fellowships Advisors (NAFA). 

LGBTQ Student Scholarship Database - Maintained by Human Rights Campaign, this database lists fellowships and grants for LGBTQ and allied students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Fellowships for Veterans, Current Service Members, and their families - While most fellowships welcome applications from current service members and veterans, this is a working list of funded programs that specifically support the academic or professional development of this group or are often a good fit for their experience and expertise.

General Scholarships for Students with Disabilities

Undergraduate Research Funding:

Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) at the University of Iowa supports funding options beyond their flagship research fellowships, including:

  • Undergraduate Research Supply GrantsRolling Applications for small grants of up to $1000 for undergraduate research and creative projects.
  • Undergraduate Research Travel Grants - Rolling applications are available for conference or professional development workshop travel for undergraduates. One-time eligibility, up to $500.

CLAS Undergraduate Research Awards

Iowa Space Grant Consortium - The Iowa Space Grant Consortium (ISGC) will award 20 research scholarships of $5,000 for undergraduate students pursuing a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines that support NASA’s mission.

Gilman Scholarship STEM Funding Supplement - In support of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, the Gilman Program is providing supplemental awards of up to $1,000 each for a Gilman Scholar to conduct STEM-related research abroad as part of their study abroad or international internship program.

Climate Change and Human Health Fellowship (CCH) - The CCH undergraduate research internship program recruits and mentors students interested researching biological mechanisms that link climate change and health and translate research knowledge toward improving health in Iowa and the nation. Members of underrepresented groups* are especially encouraged to apply.

Rural Scholars Research Program - This opportunity aims to enhance the educational and research experiences for first-year undergraduates from rural communities. Participants get hands-on experience in chemistry research, are mentored in developing and leading science service events in their home towns (including public forums, demonstrations, and other outreach events), and they develop a deeper understanding of the scientific process in bi-weekly, small group meetings with faculty.

By Discipline, Area of Study, or Type of Experience

The Carver Scholarship is available to full-time, Iowa resident, students who will be starting their junior year next fall. Eligible students must have faced obstacles in their lives. If you know of a student who may qualify, please encourage them to file their FAFSA by March 1 (if they haven’t already) and apply for the scholarship by April 1.

Hawkeye Experience Grant provides stipends in variable amounts for undergraduate students at Iowa who are involved in applied learning experiences outside of the classroom. These awards are administered by the Pomerantz Career Center.

Joseph E. and Ursil I. Callen Prize is a $5,000 award presented to an outstanding graduating senior in the University of Iowa's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students must plan to attend graduate school at the University of Iowa or any other university in the summer or fall of 2023. 

Sanxay Prize is a $2,500 award presented to an outstanding graduating senior in the University of Iowa's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students must plan to attend graduate school at the University of Iowa or any other university in the summer or fall of 2023. Students planning to attend professional programs are not eligible (e.g. MD, JD). All candidates must be nominated by an academic unit to be considered for the prize.

Phi Beta Kappa Key into Public Service Scholarship - To be eligible for the $5,000 scholarship, undergraduates must attend one of Phi Beta Kappa's 290 chapter campuses, and have an anticipated graduation year of 2024 or later, except for first year students. Phi Beta Kappa membership is not a requirement.

Stevens Phi Beta Kappa Scholarship is awarded each year to a junior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences majoring in natural science with at least two semesters of work remaining (minimum 75 semester hours earned by the close of the spring 2022 semester). More information may be found at .
